The Picciano Method™ teaches the many routine skills that are normally developed and managed by sight for their effective use in everyday life. This includes instruction in three areas of skill development:
Spatial Orientation – for developing
balance, coordination and body positioning for use in general and specific types
of movement and in interactive situations with respect to others and objects
within one’s environment
Mechanics of Movement – for learning and understanding general and specific
task management, and for developing a strong, purposeful and confident ability
to navigate and maneuver, interact with others and one’s environment,
and participate in recreational activities.
Integrative Sensing™ – a developed skill that is central to The
Picciano Method™ that is used for monitoring and assessing one’s
surroundings to ensure efficient and effective environmental management and
orientation during mobility, in interactive situations, and for personal safety
and protection.
The teaching of these skills is done in a straightforward and stepwise fashion. Participants in our program are first fully evaluated to establish a baseline of competency in each of these areas and their needs are prioritized. A plan is then devised and select exercises are chosen to address their individual needs.
Next, techniques are taught to learn and understand the lessons and skills needed to master each of these areas of development.
Finally, to ensure reproducible accuracy,
these techniques are practiced methodically and repetitively, and augmented
at the psychological level. Program participants are taught identifiable “feeling
states” which correlate and help refer to the ideal execution of each
of the learned techniques. As a result, just as high level athletes do with
time and practice, program participants soon come to learn how to move and interact
with others and with their environment through “feeling”, naturally
and unconsciously, in a manner consistent with independence and self-sufficiency.
