Case Study 3 - MML

MML is a 78 year old female retired social worker and teacher. She is a highly independent individual who, following her retirement, traveled extensively throughout the world for enjoyment. After six years of travel, she was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration and told that there was nothing that could be done about her condition. "This was very disheartening to hear. I was devastated and depressed." She became angry, frustrated, anxious and confused. She was "stumbling around in the dark, literally and figuratively." Having no real friends in her community or significant family on which to rely, she continued to be independent out of necessity but was not afraid to ask for help when necessary.

A year after her diagnosis, MML was introduced to The Picciano Method™ through an orientation and referral program that was offered by the Board of Education, Services for the Blind (Hartford, CT). Shortly after, she began ISP Training™ by attending a one hour session once every other week. As she put it, the program "shows me how to do things, helps my 'head', does not lead me to look at this [blindness] as a handicap and gives me a sense of spirituality.

After two and one half years, she feels that the program has changed her life. "I am much happier, less angry and not as argumentative. Before [entering the program] I was confused and had no hope for the future. Now I am more hopeful. If I lose more sight I will be able to cope and have fun too. Before joining the program, I wouldn't have cared about death tomorrow, [but] now, I want more life because of all there is to do".
