BFET is a 78 year old woman who is a retired school teacher and mother of three children. Throughout of her life, she has enjoyed outdoor activities such as ice skating, bird watching, gardening and walking. She was very active politically and enjoyed socializing with friends.
After a number of years of deteriorating eyesight, FET was diagnosed with macular degeneration that has since become progressively worse. Her reaction to her diagnosis was deep frustration and disappointment at not being able to partake of the simple outdoor pleasures she had enjoyed all her life. She could no longer see the birds or flowers in her garden. Her socializing and even phone calls to her friends stopped and she limited her walking to indoors only. Although she began using a walking cane, she primarily would just sit in a chair in her house for the entire day. Emotionally, she had difficulties due to failures at simple tasks such as pouring coffee or feeding her cat. Meals were simple because she had difficulty cooking and she could no longer manage house keeping. She became fearful, timid and recluse.
The effects of vision loss worsened for FET when her loving husband of 48 years died. She became very depressed. Her attitude was one of defeat, often thinking that "Now it's my turn...If I die now it's ok. I've had a good life...." Her posture deteriorated, reflecting her inner feelings - mouth clenched, hunched over, head hung low, shoulders up. Her gait was ataxic, weak and faulty. She had feelings of emptiness, fear and a loss of control. As a child, she had feared the dark. She now worried about being "locked" in darkness for the rest of her life. She had no hope for the future.
FET began ISP Training™ after being introduced to the program by a friend. After only three months of training, her son noted, there were positive changes in her behavior; and now, 15 months later, he feels she has made a "100% turnaround." She has resumed house keeping and cooking. She sits with her cat in the back yard to "smell the lilacs and listen to the birds", gardens and frequently takes walks alone. Her endurance on these walks has returned and she moves with assurity and grace. She has become very active with friends in that she now goes shopping, to the theater, lunch and weekly folk dancing. On weekends during the summer, she "goes to the pool" and soon will be joining a water aerobics class. She listens to cooking shows on television and has begun "experimenting" with these recipes in her kitchen. Whereas she frequently would irritably react and complain about situations throughout the day, she now talks about how good she feels everyday. "I feel good about myself. I have come to know who I am and my capabilities and do things for myself. I feel satisfaction in what I can accomplish. I feel very confident in myself, optimistic and I have a hopeful attitude. I no longer fell defeated - I feel I can live to 102".
