When considering the value of The Picciano Method™, it is important to recognize the benefits that are available to program participant's, not only from the standpoint of intrinsic structure and purpose of the program itself, but in comparison to what conventional programs have to offer as well.
Conventional programs provide many valuable services for people with vision loss as well as training in independent living skills such as home and personal management, methods of communication, and orientation and mobility. However, by its very nature, this approach simply serves to help people cope and adjust to a life of blindness.
In contrast, The Picciano Method™ offers instruction on how to utilize natural "neurological" mechanisms to help people live their life in a manner that is consistent with having sight. Moreover, since The Picciano Method™ teaches fundamental behavioral skills that form the basis for managing our daily activities and day-to-day functioning, our program is totally supportive, complimentary and even pre-requisite for the programs being offered by other Centers and Agencies. Our program is the "other side of the coin" -one that does not ignore "the technician separate from the technique."
Specifically, a number of benefits can be cited as well, that find their basis not only in the design of the program methodology but also in the observations and testimonials that have been given by the program participants and those who are attendant to the participants. These benefits for adults and children vary somewhat and are therefore listed separately in Tables 1 and 2 below.
